World Elder Abuse Awareness Day takes place each year on  June 15th  to raise awareness of Physical, Financial & Emotional Abuse of older people.

Internationally

It is estimated the world’s population by 2050 there will be more people over the age of 60 years than young people.  Living longer is humanity’s greatest achievement, however, there are many challenges, the recognition of Elder Abuse is a global issue.  The World Health Organisation estimates 4 to 6 % of older people globally suffer from some form of abuse, of which a large number goes unreported.

Nationally

The 7th review of the HSE’s Elder Abuse Services for 2014, found there were a total of 2,592 referrals made to the elder abuse service showing an increase of 5% on referrals from 2013.  This represents the largest number of referrals received in any year since the service was established in 2007.

Psychological abuse 29%

Financial abuse 21%

Self-Neglect 21%

Neglect 15%

Physical abuse 12%
